What is Winter Rash and How Can You Treat It?

Based in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Mounir Boutros provides dermatological treatment to those seeking help with such conditions as psoriasis, cancerous skin lesions, and cysts. In addition, Dr. Mounir Boutros focuses much of his work on treating a variety of skin rashes, including winter rash.

During the winter season, the chilly fall weather gives way to a harsher cold that causes your skin to lose its moisture. If left untreated, this dry, chapped skin can lead to the common skin irritation known as winter rash. This ailment can affect anyone, but those who have conditions such as eczema, asthma, and allergies are at a higher risk of developing it. For many individuals, winter rash returns with every winter season and affects various regions of their bodies. In addition to dry skin, those with this rash typically experience anything from redness and sensitivity to itching, flaking, and blistering.

There are a number of treatments that can both prevent and overcome winter rash. Perhaps the most common method of warding off dry winter skin is daily moisturizing. Oil-based ointments are the most effective tools to both hydrate skin and seal in moisture. Natural substances such as almond and coconut oil provide all the benefits of healthy skin without clogging pores. A humidifier also helps prevent winter rash from recurring by providing much-needed moisture at home.
